Babar Reclaims the Throne on His T20 Return. After a long absence, Babar Azam returned to Pakistan’s T20 squad in the South Africa series. Although he failed in the first match, he stayed unbeaten on 11 in the second. That was enough for the Pakistani batter to overtake Rohit Sharma and claim the top spot in T20 internationals.
On Friday (October 31) at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Babar Azam marked a record-setting day, while Saim Ayub’s unbeaten 71 powered Pakistan to a comfortable 9-wicket win with 41 balls to spare.
Babar needed just 9 runs to become the highest run-scorer in T20 internationals. He made an immediate statement, smashing a brilliant cover drive for four off his very first ball. After facing 11 more deliveries, he surpassed Rohit Sharma.
Babar now has 4,234 runs in 123 innings in T20 internationals. Previously, Rohit Sharma held the top spot with 4,231 runs in 151 innings before retiring from the format. Virat Kohli sits third on the list with 4,188 runs in 125 innings.
Next on the list is England star Jos Buttler, who has scored 3,869 runs in 144 innings. Rounding out the top five is Ireland’s Paul Stirling with 3,710 runs in 153 matches.
With Rohit and Kohli retired from T20 internationals, Jos Buttler is now the only player with a realistic chance of challenging Babar Azam at the top.
