A serious and shocking accident took place in Pucón, a city in Chile’s La Araucanía region, where an armored cash-in-transit truck struck two women while reversing inside a shopping mall parking area. The incident, recorded by security cameras, quickly spread across social media due to the graphic nature of the footage, drawing widespread attention and concern.
The vehicle, operated by a cash transport company, was in the process of reversing into a parking space when the incident occurred.
How the accident unfolded in the parking lot
According to the official reconstruction, the driver did not notice that two women were positioned directly behind the truck as he began reversing. Surveillance footage shows the vehicle continuing to move backward for several seconds without stopping, heading toward the entrance of the establishment. During this time, both women were struck. The driver did not immediately realize that the collision had taken place and continued the maneuver.
Pucón’s Carabineros commissioner, Gerald Salazar, confirmed that the driver proceeded without being aware that the victims were in the vehicle’s path.
One of the victims suffered serious injuries
The impact had severe consequences. One of the women sustained critical injuries after two of the truck’s wheels rolled over her legs, resulting in an open fracture. The second woman was also hit by the vehicle but suffered less severe injuries. Both victims received medical attention shortly after the incident. The situation raised immediate concerns about safety conditions in areas where pedestrians and large vehicles share space.
Driver prosecuted after the incident
Following the accident, the driver was arrested and brought before the Pucón Guarantee Court. Prosecutors charged him with negligent homicide and with failing to pay adequate attention to traffic conditions while performing the reversing maneuver. Despite the seriousness of the case, the court ordered his release under precautionary measures as the legal process continues.
Investigation open for 90 days
Authorities in Chile have established a 90-day period to carry out a full investigation into the incident and determine responsibility for what occurred in the shopping center parking lot. The case has sparked debate about the adequacy of safety protocols in high pedestrian traffic areas, particularly in locations where large and heavy vehicles operate.
