The caretaker government has withdrawn its plan to recruit music and physical education teachers for government primary schools, according to a statement issued Tuesday (November 4) by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
The decision follows recommendations from the Secretary Committee, which suggested that the proposed recruitment could be reconsidered at a later stage if circumstances permit.
The Press Wing noted that the interim government had taken notice of recent media reports regarding the cancellation of the proposed positions. Earlier, authorities had approved an initial plan to recruit 2,500 physical education teachers and 2,500 music teachers across an equal number of school clusters nationwide.
However, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education reversed the decision based on the Secretary Committee’s assessment. According to the committee, the project design was flawed and hiring such a small number of teachers would not yield meaningful improvements at the primary level. Instead, it could lead to disparities, given that Bangladesh has 65,569 primary schools overall.
Cluster-based recruitment would also require a single teacher to serve more than 20 schools simultaneously—an arrangement the committee deemed unmanageable within standard working hours.
The Press Wing added that the committee recommended considering the creation of dedicated posts for these subjects in all schools in the future, subject to budget availability.
