140 Killed as Typhoon Kalmaegi Ravages Philippines

The death toll from Typhoon Kalmaegi and the massive flooding it triggered in the central Philippines has climbed to 140, according to updated reports from authorities.

On Thursday (November 6), unprecedented floods swept through Cebu province, washing away homes and even large shipping containers. In response, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of emergency nationwide.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council confirmed 114 deaths, while Cebu provincial officials reported an additional 28 fatalities, pushing the total to more than 140. Another 127 people remain missing.

The Philippines’ Civil Defense Office said the tropical cyclone began its destructive path on Wednesday, affecting nearly 2 million people. More than 560,000 villagers were displaced, and approximately 450,000 residents have been moved to emergency shelters.

Local media described the flooding in Cebu as unlike anything seen before, with fast-moving waters sweeping away cars, riverside shanties, and even massive cargo containers.

Disaster response officials have also warned that another tropical system forming over the Pacific could strengthen into a super typhoon, potentially striking northern Philippines early next week.
