The biggest and brightest supermoon of 2025 will be visible in the night sky today.
The rare celestial event will coincide with the UK’s traditional “Bonfire Night” on Wednesday (November 5), creating a spectacular blend of light and color across the night skies of Europe and many other parts of the world.
The information was reported by The Guardian on Monday (November 3).
A supermoon occurs when the Moon, while orbiting Earth, reaches its closest point—known as perigee—at the same time as a full moon. As a result, the Moon appears noticeably larger and brighter than usual, making this week’s nights exceptionally luminous and visually striking.
To fully enjoy this natural phenomenon, skywatchers are advised to keep an eye on weather forecasts. Clear skies will determine the best viewing spots around the world.
The term “supermoon” is used because the Moon does not orbit Earth in a perfect circle. Its orbit is slightly elliptical, meaning its distance from Earth varies—sometimes closer, sometimes farther. When the Moon is at perigee, it is about 220,000 miles from Earth, while at its farthest point, or apogee, it can be roughly 250,000 miles away.
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon being at, or within 90 percent of, its closest approach to Earth. During this time, the Moon appears larger and more radiant than during a typical full moon.
This particular supermoon is also known as the “Beaver Moon.” Scientists have long named full moons based on seasonal patterns, a tradition stretching back centuries. Some names are straightforward, such as February’s “Snow Moon” or June’s “Strawberry Moon,” while others carry more historical or cultural significance.
The name “Beaver Moon” comes from various Indigenous American tribes and early European settlers. During November, beavers are especially active, building dams and storing food for winter—an association that led to the naming of this full moon.
Skywatchers will get their final chance to see a supermoon this year on December 4.
