Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the Election Commission (EC) has decided to grant registration to three political parties, including the National Citizens’ Party (NCP).
On Tuesday (4 November), Senior EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development at the Election Commission headquarters.
Akhtar Ahmed said the EC has decided to grant registration to the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party after completing the final review. A public notice will now be issued to allow for claims and objections. Once those are settled, the final registrations will be awarded.
A total of 143 parties applied for registration. After initial scrutiny, the EC sent 22 parties for field-level verification. Following review of the field reports, the EC initially decided to grant registration to NCP and Bangladesh National League.
However, after reports surfaced regarding NCP’s symbol dispute and the operational status of the Bangladesh National League, the EC reopened investigations and conducted further inquiries into 10 parties. After reviewing the new findings and holding several meetings, the EC reached its final decision.
The 10 parties sent for renewed field inquiry included: Amjanatar Dal, Bangladesh Ganatantrik Party (BGP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), Bangladesh Justice and Development Party, Bhashani Janashakti Party, Bangladesh Bekar Mukti Parishad, Janatar Dal, Maulik Bangla, Janata Party Bangladesh, and Bangladesh National League.
Under electoral law, a party seeking registration must have a central committee, committees in at least one-third of districts and 100 upazilas, and proof of support from 200 voters for each committee.
Parties with former MPs or those that secured at least five percent of votes in previous elections are also eligible under EC guidelines. Additional rules and documentation are required for registration.
