Seven Firearms Missing After Vault Break-In at Dhaka Airport Cargo Complex. These firearms have reportedly gone missing after a vault inside the burned cargo complex at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka was found broken into. The incident occurred in the aftermath of the massive October 18 fire that engulfed the airport’s import cargo facility.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines filed a general diary (GD) with Airport Police Station on October 28 regarding the suspected theft.
According to officials familiar with the situation, the vault originally contained 21 firearms. Fourteen were recovered, but seven—including U.S.-made M4 carbines and Brazil-made Taurus pistols—are unaccounted for. It remains unclear which agency the weapons belonged to.
Jamal Hossain, assistant manager (security) of Biman and the complainant in the GD, stated that on October 24 a joint team—including a Customs deputy commissioner, Biman’s cargo GM, NSI’s additional director, and CAAB officials—conducted an inventory of goods. The items were then secured inside the vault with a chain lock and seal.
Hossain added that on October 27 at around 9:45 p.m., on-duty DMP and Ansar personnel confirmed the seal and lock were intact. But the next morning, at around 7 a.m., a duty officer alerted him that the vault was found unsecured. Upon inspection, the vault door had no lock attached.
Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Taslima Akhter confirmed an investigation is underway.
Following a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order on Tuesday (November 4), Home Affairs Adviser Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury told reporters that authorities have yet to confirm whether the weapons were actually stolen. “We can only say more once the investigation is complete. If theft is established, those responsible will be held accountable,” he said.
The disappearance of weapons from a secure facility has once again raised concerns about security at the country’s most vital airport, already under scrutiny after the prolonged fire incident.
