A majority of Americans want the United States to quickly end its involvement in the war with Iran, even if it means falling short of its original objectives, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The survey found that 66% of respondents support a rapid withdrawal, while 27% believe the U.S. should stay engaged until all goals are achieved, regardless of how long it takes. About 6% declined to answer.

Support for ending the conflict varies along party lines. Among Republicans, 40% favor a quick exit, even without achieving U.S. objectives, while 57% back a longer military commitment.

The conflict, now entering its second month, has expanded across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead and putting pressure on the global economy. Rising energy prices have fueled concerns about inflation worldwide.

At home, public sentiment toward the war remains largely negative. Around 60% of Americans disapprove of U.S. military strikes on Iran, compared with 35% who approve, based on responses from 1,021 participants.

One of the most immediate impacts for Americans has been at the gas pump. Prices climbed above $4 per gallon on Monday for the first time in more than three years, according to GasBuddy. About two-thirds of respondents expect fuel costs to rise even further over the next year, including 40% of Republicans.

The economic strain could carry political consequences. With midterm elections approaching in November, Republicans are working to maintain their narrow control of both the House and Senate. Historically, the sitting president’s party tends to lose seats during midterms.

More than half of those surveyed said they expect the war to negatively affect their personal finances, including 39% of Republican respondents
