Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, the state’s chief legal officer, has announced that he is stepping down from his post to contest the upcoming national parliamentary election. He confirmed on Wednesday (November 5) that he plans to run for the Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency.
“I am still the Attorney General for now,” Asaduzzaman told reporters. “But I will run in the national election. When the time comes, I will share more details.” When asked who might succeed him as the country’s next Attorney General, he replied: “Whoever Bangladesh deems fit will be the next Attorney General.”
Asaduzzaman said he has already sought nomination for the Jhenaidah-1 seat and expressed confidence that he will secure it. “When the time comes, I will resign and contest the election with the BNP’s nomination,” he added.
Commenting on the abolition of the caretaker government system and the actions of former Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque, Asaduzzaman said the ruling that scrapped the caretaker government was delivered “to benefit a particular political party.”
Before becoming Attorney General, Asaduzzaman served as the BNP’s secretary for human rights. He resigned from that position prior to his appointment as the state’s top legal officer.
