Journalists working in Savar and Ashulia formed a human chain on Wednesday demanding the withdrawal of what they described as a false and fabricated case filed against two reporters by Nasreen Akter, legal affairs secretary of the Dhaka District Bangabandhu Sainik League.
The demonstration was held at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Ashulia Rajfulbaria Circle office.
Participants accused the Ashulia Police Station’s officer-in-charge of accepting a baseless theft case against the journalists without any preliminary investigation. They alleged that the case—filed with unusual haste—was intended to intimidate the press and hinder responsible journalism. They also claimed Nasreen Akter played an active role in facilitating the case.
Ashulia Press Club President Laiju Ahmed Chowdhury said, “False theft cases are being used to silence journalists. We strongly condemn this harassment and demand that the case be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, the journalist community will be compelled to launch a larger movement.”
Tuhin Ahmed, president of the Ashulia Print Media Journalists Association and Ashulia correspondent for Naya Diganta, said, “We only seek information in the public interest. We do not pursue personal gain. Yet we are being targeted with false cases. This will not stop us from doing our work. We demand a proper investigation and justice from the authorities.”
Those present included Ashulia Press Club General Secretary Omar Faruk; Senior Vice President Mehedi Hasan Mithu; Vice President Abul Kashem; General Secretary Nazrul Islam Manik; Joint Secretary Moshiur Rahman; Publicity Secretary Md. Shafiullah; members of the Ashulia Reporters Unity; and a large number of journalists from Savar, Ashulia, and Dhamrai representing both print and electronic media.
Earlier, on November 2, Nasreen Akter filed the case at Ashulia Police Station against two journalists—Sakib Aslam, Savar correspondent for Bangladesh Bulletin and general secretary of Ashulia Reporters Unity, and Sofi Sumon, Ashulia correspondent for Sokaler Shomoy. Journalists describe the case as harassment and demand its withdrawal.
