He made the remarks on Friday afternoon (7 November) at the University Teachers’ Forum (UTF) launch and discussion event held at the Shamsur Rahman Auditorium of the Bangla Academy in Dhaka.
National Citizens’ Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam has stated that there will be no “note of dissent” in the July Charter. “Whatever consensus we have reached will remain, and the people will decide the rest. Whatever the public endorses will be implemented,” he said. “We expect that very soon, through the legal framework of the July Charter, we will move toward elections. Embracing the spirit of the mass uprising, we will lead Bangladesh forward.”
Nahid Islam said that all those who participated in the mass uprising should be represented in the upcoming election and should be part of the next parliament. “That parliament will form the Reform Council, which will work on drafting a new constitution. Teachers must participate in this process, and we will ensure that from the NCP’s side.”
He added that the upcoming parliament and the Reform Council should include youth, teachers, religious scholars, women, minorities, and professionals from diverse backgrounds. “Together, we will implement the July Charter. But before that, our current demand is a referendum. Based on the July Charter, this order must be issued to Dr. Muhammad Yunus.”
During the event, the University Teachers’ Forum (UTF) Manifesto was read by Convenor Professor Md. Sirajul Islam and Member Secretary Professor Shamim Hamidi.
